Cape Verde Holidays

Cape Verde is made up of 10 volcanic islands and a number of islets. The islands are: São Vicente, Santo Antão, São Nicolau, Santa Luzia, Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago, Maio, Fogo and Brava. The islets being: Branco, Raso, Rei and Rombo. The majority of the islands have mountain peaks; the highest peak is Pico do Cano, which is still an active volcano, standing on the island of Fogo. The group is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, 600km (450 miles) northwest of Senegal, Africa and has a population of around 450,000 residents of African and Portuguese origin. Up until 1975 the islands were under Portuguese rule; however in 1975 they gained their independence and now have the name, the Republic of Cape Verde. Cape Verde has recently been promoted from the least developed country’s category to the group of medium development. This is a big step forward for the country and proves its efforts to develop itself since gaining independence. Over recent years, tourism has had a massive boost in the country through foreign contributions, where 58% of all contribution was pumped into the travel and tourism sector. The origins of the country’s population can be seen in the architecture and culture of the country, much of the traditions can be seen drawing from those of rural Portugal and Africa; with football and church activities being at the heart of most communities. The musical influences found in Cape Verde can be traced to Portugal, the Caribbean, Africa and Brazil. When looking around Cape Verde, the influence of European architecture can be seen mixing beautifully with scenery that is traditional of Africa.
